BACKGROUND:After minoring in German at the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point and finishing a master's degree in German literature at Vanderbilt University in Nashville TN where I taught six semesters of German I moved to Regensburg Germany where I lived for eight years. Over the years I have done free-lance German-English translation in fields as diverse as accounting pharmacology psychiatry music and modern art.

Translating into English requires of course an excellent understanding of English as well as German. My undergraduate major was English. During my studies I worked for three years as a peer tutor in the UW-Stevens Point writing lab. I also taught two semesters of composition at the University of Northern Iowa while doing a year of graduate work in English. While in Germany I was employed for five years as a lecturer in the English department at the University of Regensburg in Bavaria a job with a heavy focus on composition. On top of my formal experience with language I do a lot of writing myself and am extremely attentive to vocabulary syntax grammar register compositional structure etc.

To summarize then in addition to near-native fluency in German I also bring to bear the English skills--writing editing and proofreading--vital for good translating.

RATE: $40 an hour minimum charge 1 hour. (Some people charge by the word but because different kinds of texts vary so greatly in difficulty level I find it easier to simply charge by the hour than to come up with a fair per-word rate.)

NOTE: Before accepting work I evaluate the difficulty level with respect to my ability. It is as important to me as it is to a client that every translation I do be done exactly right. If I feel a text contains language too specialized for my skills I will decline the project without further ado.
